Think of the epoxy finish as being like a car finish. You can use a hair dryer or heat gun to eliminate small scratches, just be careful, if it starts to smoke that’s too long in one place! Car wax such as carnuba wax creates protective finish. Like the hood of a car it is a very tough finish but can be scratched like the hood of your automobile can be scratched. Setting dishes on it should be no problem but a heavy object with sharp edges or points on the bottom dragged across the surface can create a scratch. I would not recommend using it as a cutting board as a knife will make thin lines in the finish like it would if you sliced a brisket on your car.
It also has UV stabilizers so a little sunlight won’t hurt it, but this finish is not intended for 24/7 outdoor use. Do not set a skillet or other kitchenware heated over 475 degrees or you risk leaving a mark. For ordinary cleaning and use you can use any kind of cleaner- Windex is good because it doesn’t leave streaks and the finish is so clear and glossy. You can also apply a coat of carnuba or other car wax about once a year to keep it super smooth and shiny.
If you do damage the finish in a way that is unacceptable to you, bring it to my shop and I can sand it down and pour a new surface, making your living art furniture brand new again. If you have any other questions feel free to give me a call! 512-636-6250. Nothing makes as clear and shiny a finish like epoxy does, and it really brings out the beautiful grain and patterns in your heirloom furniture.
